Today's Morning Edition music is from 40 years ago today, when the woman who would become known as the "godmother of punk" recorded her first single, a cover of "Hey Joe."
It's a song that has been recorded by many artists including Jimi Hendrix. In this version, Patti Smith adds some of her poetry at the beginning in which she talks about Patty Hearst who had recently been kidnapped by the Symbionese Liberation Army.
