Rounds led his opponents in fundraising and polling for most of the campaign.

Criticism over his involvement with a visa program aimed at spurring foreign investment in South Dakota led to an influx of money from both parties' national Senate campaign committees and made the race briefly competitive. But Weiland's bump in the polls faded before Election Day.

Rounds will join Republican John Thune as South Dakota's senators.
