U.S. Sen. Al Franken made his first appearance on David Letterman's "The Late Show" since going to Washington in 2009.

The senator and Letterman are old friends that date back to Franken's days as a writer and performer on "Saturday Night Live."

During Wednesday night's show, Franken urged Letterman to run for the U.S. Senate in his native state of Indiana. Republican Sen. Dan Coats is retiring.

Franken talked about the newly passed religious objections law in Indiana that critics say would allow discrimination against gays and lesbians and called it a disgrace.

Franken was an occasional guest on Letterman in the 1980 and 1990s, but last appeared on Letterman in 2008.
