All this week, MPR News is reporting stories from Minnesota's Iron Range.

We'll talk with people who've been hit hard by the current mining downturn, and we'll look at new ideas to generate jobs and revitalize communities.

MPR News host Cathy Wurzer caught up with Bill Hanna, executive editor of the Mesabi Daily News, based in Virginia, Minn., about booms and busts on the Range.

Hanna shared his perspective on the current downturn, and offered a little context: He began his work in newspapers in the middle of an earlier downturn on the Iron Range.

MPR News live event: The Future of the Iron Range

In a free event hosted by MPR News, speakers will take the stage to pitch their ideas to generate jobs and revitalize communities across the region — everything from small business support to mountain biking trails, to conversations with young people and mining experts.

Hosts Cathy Wurzer and MPR News reporter Dan Kraker will follow with their questions, allowing the audience to weigh in, too.
