Flash flood and severe thunderstorm watches in effect

Severe weather update

Thunderstorms are erupting across western and central Minnesota. A flash flood watch is in effect into Thursday morning. A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until midnight. Both watches include the Twin Cities metro area. The highest risk of severe and flooding storm in the metro is from this evening through the overnight hours.

...THREAT FOR FLASH FLOODING INCREASING FOR THIS AFTERNOON AND

TONIGHT...

.A FLASH FLOOD WATCH HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR PORTIONS OF CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN MINNESOTA, AS WELL ADJOINING AREAS OF WEST CENTRAL WISCONSIN, FROM 4 PM CDT THIS AFTERNOON UNTIL 10 AM CDT THURSDAY MORNING. THIS WATCH INCLUDES THE TWIN CITIES METROPOLITAN AREA.

THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED TO BEGIN DEVELOPING ACROSS THE WATCH AREA THIS AFTERNOON AND CONTINUE THROUGH THE OVERNIGHT HOURS. AN ABNORMALLY HIGH WATER CONTENT IN THE ATMOSPHERE WILL LEAD TO RAINFALL RATES OF 2 INCHES OR MORE PER HOUR. THE THUNDERSTORMS MAY TRAIN ACROSS THE AREA DUE TO A NEARLY STATIONARY FRONT IN PLACE, LEADING TO A HEAVY RAINFALL EVENT AND FLASH FLOODING.

* SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH FOR PORTIONS OF  EAST CENTRAL MINNESOTA

NORTHWEST WISCONSIN

* EFFECTIVE THIS WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON FROM 420 PM UNTIL MIDNIGHT CDT.

* PRIMARY THREATS INCLUDE... ISOLATED DAMAGING WIND GUSTS TO 70 MPH POSSIBLE

ISOLATED LARGE HAIL EVENTS TO 1.5 INCHES IN DIAMETER POSSIBLE A TORNADO OR TWO POSSIBLE

SUMMARY...SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS ONGOING WEST OF THE MISSISSIPPI VALLEY WILL CONTINUE TO DEVELOP/SPREAD EASTWARD OVER THE NEXT FEW HOURS...ALONG WITH ASSOCIATED RISK FOR LARGE HAIL AND LOCALLY DAMAGING WINDS WITH STRONGER STORMS.
