The University of Minnesota Board of Regents will hold a special meeting on Friday to discuss a proposal to rename Coffman Memorial Union and three other buildings on campus.
Earlier this year, a task force recommended the buildings be renamed because they honor university leaders who supported discriminatory policies at the university against black or Jewish students. University President Eric Kaler backs the recommendation to change the names, but several members of the Board of Regents have criticized the task force report, saying its research into the renaming is flawed.
MPR News host Cathy Wurzer spoke with Regent Abdul Omari about the issue. Omari has been a member of the Board of Regents for the past six years and supports renaming all four buildings.
