Journalist Cokie Roberts on social responsibility

Emmy Award-winning journalist and commentator Cokie Roberts of NPR and ABC News was in Minnesota recently to speak about the ways we can contribute to making America — and the world — a better place.

She's spent more than 40 years in broadcasting and is in the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame. Sokie written six New York Times best-selling books, most of them about the roles of women in U.S. history.

Cokie Roberts was invited to give the keynote address at the Hendrickson Institute for Ethical Leadership at St. Mary's University of Minnesota.

The topic for the forum was "Weaving the Social Safety Net at Home and Around the World."

Roberts said there is a "strong social responsibility fabric running through our history in America." And she added that the social safety net is "a story of women... women who saw the needs and strove to fill them."

Cokie Roberts spoke in Minneapolis on April 16, the day after fire destroyed the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.
