Pleasant Thursday; periods of showers and big temperature swings coming

Thursday has been getting off to a frosty start across northern Minnesota. Temperatures at 7 a.m. included 35 degrees at International Falls, 32 at Eveleth and just 29 at Hibbing. The Twin Cities reported 50 degrees.

Seasonable Thursday

Thursday morning will bring sunshine to much of Minnesota before increasing clouds sweep across the state. Southwesterly breezes will increase to 15 to 25 mph by mid-day. A few showers are likely to pop up in our northwest corner during the afternoon.

High temperatures for Thursday should range from low 60s in the northeast to the low 70s in parts of the south. The Twin Cities will warm to near 70.

Cold front coming

Periods of rain will break out Thursday night, mainly across northern Minnesota ahead of a cold front coming our way from Canada.

That front will cross Minnesota on Friday and might kick off a few stray showers as it passes.

Cooler air behind said cold front will bring us the feeling of fall. Highs should be in the 50s in the north and 60s in the south.

Bet on Saturday for the weekend

Saturday is likely to be cool but the best day of the weekend for most of us. High temperatures are forecast from the low 50s up north to the low 60s farther south.

Increasing clouds could lead to showers late Saturday afternoon or evening for southern Minnesota.

Showers and thunderstorms are likely for Saturday night and Sunday. Strong storms are possible late on Sunday.

Big temperature swings next week

Monday will feel like summer again with very warm temperatures that might reach 80 in the Twin Cities with dew points back up into the 60s. Strong or even severe thunderstorms are possible.

Portions of Minnesota and Wisconsin could pick up one to two inches of rain (purple areas below) from Sunday morning through Monday night.

Temperatures will crash as we go beyond Monday. Most of next week beginning on Tuesday and probably continuing to about Saturday will feel like October, which it will be.

It’s about time to take your sweatshirts out of storage.
