Two people died Thursday when their car was rear-ended by a dump truck and crashed into a semi on a highway southeast of the Twin Cities.
The State Patrol said it happened at about 12:20 p.m. on State Highway 55 in Rosemount, heading toward Hastings. An eastbound semi stopped to turn left at Doyle Path. A pickup truck and Subaru Legacy stopped behind it, but then a dump truck failed to stop and struck the other three vehicles.
The pickup truck was pushed into a ditch but the Subaru was caught between the dump truck and semi. The two occupants of the Subaru — 47-year-old William Craig and 48-year-old Colette Craig, both of South St. Paul — died from their injuries.
The Patrol said the drivers of the three other vehicles received non-life-threatening injuries. Highway 55 was closed for several hours after the crash.
Authorities did not immediately release additional information about why the dump truck failed to stop, but said alcohol was not a factor in the crash. Road conditions were dry at the time.
Three people died in three other crashes in the Twin Cities on Thursday.
