The first half of winter seems broken across the Upper Midwest.
Temperatures are running 9 degrees warmer than average so far in January. December was 5.6 degrees warmer than average in the Twin Cities.
The 30-day temperature departure map shows temperatures more than 10 degrees warmer than average across parts of the Red River Valley in northwest Minnesota.
Closer to average
This weekend and next week will feel closer to average across Minnesota. Highs will be in the 20s this weekend across most of Minnesota.
The average high for the Twin Cities is 23 degrees this weekend. But the average high for International Falls is just 15 degrees.
Semi-arctic late next week?
Right now, the forecast maps don’t suggest any major snow systems over the next week. But colder air appears ready to nudge into Minnesota next week. Wednesday looks like the mildest day with highs in the 30s once again. But temperatures appear ready to at least approach the zero mark by next Friday morning in northern Minnesota.
We’re still searching for a more typical late January Arctic outbreak this winter.
