The mercury shot up to 91 degrees at MSP Airport at 2:18 p.m. Thursday. That’s the first 90 of the year and the warmest temperature since last August. It’s also just one degree shy of the record high of 92 degrees.
Heatwave intensifies
Our early June heatwave intensifies through this weekend. We’ll see widespread highs in the 90s across Minnesota with temperatures near 100 degrees in the Red River Valley and much of northwest Minnesota Friday and Saturday.

Saturday looks like the hottest day for some locations. The Twin Cities should easily break the record high of 92 set in 1925 and 1911.

Dew points will also surge into the 60s to near 70 degrees Friday and Saturday.

Sunday brings slight relief to northern Minnesota.

Rain chances look very spotty through the weekend. The best chance for a cooling shower or thunderstorm slides from northern Minnesota to the south Sunday and Sunday night.
Air quality alert issued Friday
The combination of heat and stagnant air has prompted an air quality alert for the Twin Cities area from noon to 9 p.m. Friday.

...The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has issued an Air Quality Alert for ozone pollution. The Air Quality Index (AQI) is expected to reach the Orange or Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups category.

WHEN...From 12 PM CDT Friday through 9 PM CDT Friday.
IMPACTS...Sensitive groups, such as people with lung disease (including asthma), heart disease, children and older adults, and people who are active outdoors, may experience health effects.
ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Sunny skies, hot temperatures, low humidity, and light winds will produce an environment favorable for emissions of nitrogen dioxide (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) near the Twin Cities to quickly form ozone. Ozone concentrations will be the lowest in the morning hours Friday, will gradually rise midday, and peak in the late afternoon. Air quality will improve Friday evening.
