Thursday brought just the kind of steady soaking rains Minnesota needs to recharge soils before free-up this fall.
Thursday’s Updated U.S. Drought Monitor for Minnesota does not include Thursday’s rainfall. It shows most of southwest Minnesota is drought-free. Most of Minnesota has seen improvement in drought categories over the past 90 days. Extreme drought lingers over parts of northern Minnesota.
Soaking rains
Rainfall totals are impressive for much of central Minnesota. A huge swath of over an inch of rain fell from Bemidji through southwest Minnesota. Here are some select (preliminary) rainfall totals.
Brainerd 1.2 inches
Bemidji 1.3 inches
Glencoe 1.5 inches
Hutchinson 1.6 inches
New Ulm 1.76 inches
Sleepy Eye 1.85 inches
Around the Twin Cities, most locations report between .5 and 1 inches of rainfall.
St. Paul Airport .57 inches
MSP Airport .79 inches
Victoria .84 inches
Rainfall totals are lowest in northeast Minnesota with this system. Most areas picked up less than .1 inches of rain.
