Summery Saturday; heat ramps up for Sunday and Monday

Update on the excessive heat watch for Sunday

It’ll be a breezy Saturday, but this will be the most comfortable day of the next four days. Highs will be in the 80s across much of Minnesota Saturday afternoon, with mainly 70s in northeastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin. Portions of west-central and southwestern Minnesota could top 90, and cool 60s are expected near Lake Superior.

Twin Cities metro area highs are forecast to reach the low to mid 80s Saturday afternoon. That’s a few degrees warmer than our average Twin Cities high of 80 for this date.

Rain chances?

It’ll be a rain-free weekend for much of southern and central Minnesota. There have been some scattered showers and thunderstorms in northwestern Minnesota and parts of north-central Minnesota Saturday morning. Those areas of rain will expand eastward Saturday afternoon.

The best chance of periods of showers and thunderstorms Saturday afternoon and evening is expected to be in roughly the northern third of Minnesota—-and eventually parts of northwestern Wisconsin. Central Minnesota and west-central Wisconsin could see an isolated shower or thunderstorm too.

The week ahead

After a Twin Cities high temp in the upper 90s to around 100 on Monday, metro area highs are projected to reach the lower 90s Tuesday, followed by mid 80s Wednesday, lower 90s Thursday and mid 90s on Friday.

Weather nugget

Last year, our official Twin Cities high temp reached the 90s in 10 of the first 13 days of June. Our Twin Cities official high has reached the 90s just once so far this June, but we’ll add to that total tomorrow and much of the coming week.
