Monday’s snowfall got our attention with slick roads and snowy commutes.

Tuesday brings another shot of snow to much of Minnesota. A surge of moisture from Iowa will push north Tuesday. We’ll see some patchy lighter snow overnight, but snowfall coverage and intensity will pick up once again starting Tuesday morning.

It could be another problematic morning rush hour.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s NAM 3 km model paints bands of light to moderate snow swirling through Minnesota between 6 a.m. Tuesday and 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Snowfall totals look likely to be in the range of 1 to 3 inches again Tuesday. Lake-effect plumes along the North Shore will drive higher totals locally.

More favorable temperatures Tuesday

Warmer temperatures Tuesday may help make roads less hazardous. On roads that have been treated, chemicals will perform better since temperatures will be closer to 32 degrees by midday Tuesday.

I still expect slick spots, but if road crews can get ahead that could mitigate the overall commute risk. There are plenty of examples of commuters who drove too fast for road and weather conditions Monday.

We see it every year. Slow down as conditions warrant. That’s the best way to get through wintry commutes unscathed.

Stay safe out there, Minnesota.
