Wednesday should be mostly dry before more rain develops by evening into the overnight. Much of southern Minnesota could see up to 1 inch of additional rainfall while snow develops northwest.

The rain has been adding up. The Twin Cities set a daily record Tuesday with 1.34 inches of rainfall. Much of southern Minnesota has seen 1 to 3 inches of rain since Monday night.

The rain came with some large hail too. Tennis ball-sized hail was observed in Sleepy Eye in southwestern Minnesota, and severe hail (nickel size) was reported up to Bloomington in the Minneapolis suburbs.

Enjoy a break for the most part from rain on Wednesday. A few lucky spots in central Minnesota may even see a peek or two of sunshine. A large temperature contrast will be set up across the state however with a spread of 25 degrees from northwest to southeast.

More rain Wednesday night into Friday

Another round of precipitation develops late Wednesday in northwestern Minnesota and will expand and spread east quickly Wednesday evening into the overnight. Look for a soggy Thursday into early Friday.

Wintry weather on the way

The precipitation will be in the form of snow for the northwest corner of Minnesota where several or more inches could fall in some spots.

Winter storm warnings extend through Montana and North Dakota but not into Minnesota, at least not yet.

The cold finally breaks through and sweeps across the whole state by Friday into the weekend. Weekend high temperatures will be well below normal and frigid. Saturday will see subfreezing highs in northwestern Minnesota and 30s elsewhere.
