The season’s first snowfall attacked Minnesota last night with impressive wind-driven snow squalls. Huge flakes the size of half-dollars pelted the Weather Lab late Monday night.
The snow squalls came with wind too. Winds gusted over 60 mph in St. James in southwestern Minnesota during the peak of the snow squall Monday evening.
4 E St. James [Watonwan Co, MN] AWOS reports Snow Squall at 30 Oct, 9:35 PM CDT -- Observed 61kt gust, with 1/2 mile. Road temps were above freezing.
When the fury of the season’s first snow was done, several inches fell around Minnesota. The highest total in Minnesota so was an eye-opening 8.4 inches in Two Harbors on the North Shore!
Snowfall around the greater Twin Cities generally ranged between 1 and 3 crusty inches in most areas.

Officially at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, the storm total snowfall is updated to 2.7 inches as of 1 p.m. Tuesday.

The 2 inches of snow depth at the Twin Cities airport observed Tuesday morning ties the year 1905 for the most on record for Halloween. (The Halloween 1991 storm snow fell after the morning snow depth observation was taken.)

Frigid Halloween night
This is one of the colder Halloweens on record for Minnesota. High temperatures Tuesday will hover in the 20s to 30s around Minnesota.
Factor in the wind and it will feel like teens around 5 p.m. in northwestern Minnesota as trick-or-treaters venture out, with wind chills in the 20s in the Twin Cities.
Temperatures will gradually moderate this week across our region. Highs in the 40s will be common by Friday in southern Minnesota.
