This could be the coldest outbreak of winter for much of the U.S.
A bitter arctic air mass covers most of the central U.S. this week. By my count wind chill warnings or advisories cover parts of at least 20 states currently. Wind chill advisories are flying as far south as Texas.
For Minnesota, the current wind chill warnings and advisories are pretty run-of-the-mill for January. Still, wind chills in the -20s to around -40 are nothing to sneeze at.

January thaw next week
Forecast models are pretty consistent with a January thaw and milder Pcific air mass next week.
Both NOAA’s GFS model and the European model bring temperatures into the 30s for the Twin Cities and southern Minnesota next week.
Here’s NOAA’s GFS temperature output for early next week.
So hang in there, it looks like teh season’s first subzero run may be the last for at least two weeks, and that puts us into February.
Stay tuned.
