An unusually warm season from spring to winter finally saw a change in January, but that warmer weather may return.
According to retired climatologist and meteorologist Mark Seeley, the average temperatures across the state have been far below freezing. Climate stations from International Falls to Rochester reported temperatures at least 40 degrees below freezing.
However, in the final weeks of January, temperatures are expected to be above average before plateauing in February. This could signal the warmest meteorological winter for Minnesota since 1997-1998.
MPR News host Cathy Wurzer spoke with Seeley about the swinging pendulum of weather in their weekly weather chat.
