A new pet shelter in Maplewood has a goal that’s different from other animal rescues. Attached to Tubman domestic violence shelter, this home for pets serves people experiencing domestic violence. It’s the first of its kind in the Twin Cities.
According to the organization, nearly half of people delay leaving a domestic violence situation and nearly a quarter return out of fear for pet safety. Additionally, more than 70 percent of survivors say their companion animal has been injured or killed as revenge or intimidation.
Construction on the pet shelter began this week. MPR News host Tom Crann spoke with Veronika Lanseva, a Tubman board member, and Jennifer Polzin, the CEO of Tubman.
