Wildflower Chasers Kelly Povo and Phyllis Root always keep their eyes on the ground, but their recent hunt in Tettegouche State Park started slow.

“Since we’re not seeing a lot of wildflowers, maybe we’ll see the view that’s out at the end,” Povo said.

The calm morning on the North Shore hadn’t proved fruitful for their search. But once they stopped to take in the expansive coast of Lake Superior, their luck turned around.

“Here’s something we’ve never seen before,” Povo said. It was bristly sarsaparilla.

Root described the a shrub-like wildflower. It looks like “an umbrella had lost its cover and the spokes all went up and had beautiful little balls on the end,” she said.

The Wildflower Chasers were delighted they had looked up for a change.
