With tensions flaring this election cycle, how are would-be shooters identified and stopped?

Investigators are still trying to piece together a motive for the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. 

They’re going through shooter Thomas Crooks’ background and search history to get a fuller picture of the assassination attempt — likely with an eye toward preventing more political violence. 

Star Tribune reporter Stephen Montemayor looked into the FBI’s threat assessment process in Minnesota. Montemayor talked with MPR News All Things Considered host Tom Crann about the FBI’s approach to identifying people who might be considering an act of violence and how to prevent them from carrying it out.
