Minneapolis police investigate string of violent crimes in recent days

Minneapolis police are investigating a string of violent incidents that have taken place since last Thursday, including three homicides over the weekend.

The department reported 10 violent crimes between Thursday night and Sunday morning. Police Chief Brian O’Hara said the department is increasing patrols in high-crime areas in response.

The crimes included nine shootings — two of them fatal — as well as a fatal stabbing.

The first fatal shooting happened just after 7 p.m. Saturday on the 2600 block of Third Avenue South. A 20-year-old man died after being shot outside.

Just after 1 a.m. Sunday, a 45-year-old man was fatally shot on the 3200 block of Penn Avenue North. The man was found on the sidewalk and later died from his injuries.

And just after 3 a.m. Sunday, a 31-year-old man was fatally stabbed inside a residence on the 3400 block of Penn Avenue North. Police said it appears the stabbing happened after a fight inside the home.

The other shootings left seven people injured, some seriously.

Police said the 10 violent incidents under investigation since last Thursday do not appear to be connected.

O’Hara said the department is getting help in its investigations and in patrolling from the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, and several other law enforcement partners.
