A Hennepin County jury Wednesday found a Minneapolis man guilty of second-degree murder in a fatal shooting near Lake Street last November. Damarean Bible, 25, faces sentencing on Sept. 11.
He fatally shot 38-year-old Savannah Ryan Williams on November 29. Friends and family of Williams remembered her as an outgoing person and a beloved member of the Twin Cities transgender community.
“Savannah was fierce, full of life. She had a big personality and an even bigger heart. She’s going to be dearly, dearly missed,” Amber Muhm, an HIV outreach and prevention specialist with the Aliveness Project, said last year after Williams’ death.
OutFront Minnesota, an LGBTQ+ advocacy organization, said their community continues to mourn Williams’ death.
“We hope that this verdict brings some closure, but we know that the grief of this loss is ongoing. Savannah should still be alive today, and all members of our 2SLGBTQIA+ communities deserve to be able to live free from violence. We will keep working for that world,” the statement read.
In a statement following the verdict, Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said her office is committed to improving safety for transgender people, and members of other marginalized and targeted communities.
