Weekend glance: Warmer temps with light snow up north

As we head into the final stretch before Thanksgiving, the weather looks favorable, with temperatures expected to be above average this weekend. However, a significant cooldown is forecast for next week.

Northern Minnesota may experience light snow showers in the latter half of the weekend, with minor accumulations possible.

Weekend warmup

Despite the cloudy forecast, we can expect highs around 40 degrees on Saturday, with temperatures reaching the mid-40s on Sunday. Average high temperatures for Nov. 23 and 24 is 38 degrees with an average low of 24 degrees.

A clipperlike system will bring light snow showers to areas north of Interstate 94 late Sunday into Monday. Snow totals could range from a trace to more than 2 inches in some spots.

Cold temps leading up to Thanksgiving

High pressure building over Alaska will push colder Canadian air southeast toward the Great Lakes region. As a result, we can expect high temperatures to dip below freezing early next week and continuing into Thanksgiving.

Seasonal outlook

The new seasonal weather outlooks from the Climate Prediction Center are in.

The forecast indicates a slightly cooler than normal December through February for the western half of the state, while the eastern half has equal chances of experiencing either cooler or warmer-than-normal conditions.

The outlook also suggests a wetter-than-normal season for most of the state, with equal chances of drier or wetter-than-normal conditions for some western counties.
