One person died in a fire at a senior apartment complex in Robbinsdale on Tuesday morning.
According to Robbinsdale police spokesperson John Elder, fire crews were called to the Robbins Landing apartments just after 5 a.m. The seven-story apartment complex serves seniors and disabled people.
Police officers located the fire in a third-floor apartment. When they opened the door, they were met with thick black smoke and could not get into the unit, according to Elder. Fire crews were later able to get inside and evacuate a woman from the apartment.
Paramedics treated her at the scene, but the woman died from her injuries. Her name has not been released.
Police and fire personnel evacuated the rest of the residents of the building. They were taken to heated Metro Transit buses to wait as crews finished putting out the fire; temperatures at the time were in the teens.
Elder said the fire and damage was mostly contained to the third-floor apartment where crews believe it started. Residents were able to re-enter the building around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Personnel from the West Metro Fire-Rescue District responded to help fire crews from Robbinsdale. The state fire marshal and the Robbinsdale Fire Department are investigating the cause.
