Child dies after accidentally shooting himself in Otter Tail County

A child has died after accidentally shooting himself Sunday in central Minnesota.

The Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office said the shooting happened at about 5:40 p.m. in Oak Valley Township, southeast of the city of Deer Creek.

The 3 1/2-year-old boy was taken to a hospital in Wadena, where he later died from the gunshot wound. The child’s name has not been released.

Authorities on Monday did not offer further details on how the child got hold of the gun, or who else was there at the time of the shooting.

The sheriff’s office is investigating the incident.
