The four candidates seeking the DFL nomination in Minnesota's 8th Congressional District discussed the jobs, the economy, sulfide mining and other important issues facing their district during an online forum hosted by MPR News earlier today. Each of the candidates shared a few closing thoughts with MPR about the forum. Rep. Chip Cravaack has also responded.
Minnesota Public Radio hosted the four candidates seeking the DFL nomination in the state's 8th Congressional Debate. Here's what voters and 8th District watchers had to say presented in the context of what the candidates said.
Jeff Anderson, Tarryl Clark, Daniel Fanning and Rick Nolan have started raising money and gathering endorsements in this large and varied district. Outside interest groups eager to influence voters in the district have already spent money on TV ads. Democrats hope to reclaim the seat held for decades by Rep. Jim Oberstar (D). Oberstar was the longest serving member of Congress from Minnesota when he lost to Cravaack in 2010.
"It's the biggest thing probably from a governing standpoint that the city of Virginia has ever faced" -- Virginia mayor Steve Peterson on the future of the local hospital.
Great Lakes shippers are particularly unhappy about New York rules that set live-organism limits 100 times tougher for existing ships than those under the international standard. For newly built ships, New York's standards would be 1,000 times stronger.
Deer hunters will flock to their shacks and stands this weekend as the gun season begins. Wildlife management officials says the state's biological capacity could handle a larger deer population, but they contend it wouldn't be socially tolerated.
