Pure Bliss, a ranch and outdoor event center on the White Earth Reservation, isn't easy to find. It's miles from the closest small town. Yet, the line of cars parked along the dusty gravel road in Mahnomen County seemed to stretch for miles as hundreds of people found their way to this remote spot over the weekend. They came to demonstrate defiance against Line 3, the 340-mile replacement pipeline that Enbridge Energy is building along a new route across northern Minnesota. And some came a very long way.

City workers on Thursday cleared barricades at 38th Street and Chicago Avenue in south Minneapolis, the site transformed a year ago into an occupied protest and memorial following the murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer. Mayor Jacob Frey said the work was the start of a reopening of the area, and he vowed to spend money to boost local businesses and improve the streetscape.

Prosecutors are seeking a 30-year sentence for the former Minneapolis police officer convicted of murder in George Floyd’s death, but a defense attorney is asking that Derek Chauvin be sentenced to probation and time already served, according to court documents filed Wednesday.

Enbridge is more than half done building the $7.3 billion project. It paused construction for April and May because of the spring thaw, but now says 4,000 workers are expected on the ground by mid-June. Meanwhile, more than 1,000 pipeline opponents are expected in northern Minnesota this weekend for several days of large-scale protests and civil disobedience.

Trinity Ottoson-Smith died on Thursday, after being shot while playing on a trampoline outside a Minneapolis home earlier this month.
Another child hit by stray gunfire in the city this month, 6-year-old Aniya Allen, died last week. A third child, 10-year-old Ladavionne Garrett Jr., remains in critical condition after an April 30 shooting.
