St. John's University named a 1970 graduate with a varied career in public policy and business as its interim president.
The university announced Tuesday that Dan Whalen, will take over for Brother Dietrich Reinhart, who has been diagnosed with melanoma.
The board of Regents will now start its search for the 12th president of St. John's.
Whalen attended St. John's and majored in government. In the years since, he worked in public policy for Gov. Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia, New York State and the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences.
He also holds an MBA degree from Stanford, and has worked for several major telecommunications business.
Whalen has been a member of the St. John's Board of Regents since 1997, serving as its chair from 2004 to 2007. (Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
