The Minnesota Legislature has sent Gov. Mark Dayton a bill that would forbid state child care assistance money from being used to pay union dues.
The Senate passed the bill Monday afternoon. Republican Sen. Ted Lillie of Lake Elmo said the bill is designed to ensure that state child care money helps low- and middle-income parents pay for child care.
"When we protect these funds we really protect the parents and the families and the intention of those funds going directly to the families," Lillie said.
Earlier this month a Ramsey County District Court judge ruled that Dayton doesn't have the authority to order a union vote among home day care providers. Dayton said he's reviewing the decision and hasn't decided whether he'll appeal.
