A statue of Christopher Columbus that had stood for more than 30 years in his namesake Wisconsin city is coming down.
The Columbus City Council voted Tuesday to put the statue in storage until another use for it is found.
The fiberglass statue stands at the intersection of Highways 16-60 and 151 in Columbus, a city of 5,000 about 30 miles northeast of Madison.
Frank Roelke told council members the city shouldn't be memorializing someone who treated Native Americans so poorly, the State Journal reported. Keeping the statue up would be pretending that Columbus was a good person, when history shows otherwise, he said.
But, Jack Sanderson said the statue should remain where it is. He said agreeing to take it down or move it would be to erase history.
The council voted 4-1 to remove the statue.
