DFL state Sen. Mary Jo McGuire says she's in a "state of shock" after legislative redistricting put her in the same district as another DFL senator.

McGuire, who lives in Falcon Heights, and John Marty, of Roseville, are two of the 46 incumbent legislators who'll share a district under the new map. They'll have to decide whether to retire, move to a new district or potentially face off in a difficult re-election campaign this year.

McGuire said she probably won't make a decision until next week at the earliest, and she plans to discuss the situation with Marty.

"We, on policy issues, are very similar. So, it's hard, because I want to see John there and I want to see me there. I don't want to see either of us leave the Senate," she said.

The Senate map has two districts where DFLers are paired, four districts where Republicans are paired and two where an incumbent DFLer has been paired with an incumbent Republican. The House map has six DFL pairings, six GOP pairings, and three districts where DFL and GOP incumbents could face off.
