A federal grand jury has indicted the four former Minneapolis police officers involved in George Floyd's killing last year on criminal civil rights charges. Gov. Tim Walz on Thursday laid out his timeline for ending COVID-19 restrictions — including the end of curbs in time for Memorial Day weekend — serving notice that the pandemic’s end is near. "It's been a long journey, but we did the things that needed to be done,” Walz told reporters as he unveiled the winding down of restrictions. “The job is not done until it's done, but the plan to finish it is on us now.”

The attorney for Derek Chauvin filed a motion Tuesday seeking a new trial for the former Minneapolis police officer, who was convicted of murder last month in the death of George Floyd. The motion cites 10 reasons Chauvin should be granted a new trial, including judicial abuse of discretion over granting a change of venue and sequestering the jury before deliberations. It says “publicity during the proceedings threaten[ed] the fairness of the trial.”

Police accountability legislation continues to be a contentious part of budget negotiations. Minnesota’s Democratic-controlled state House included several policing provisions in its public safety budget bill for the 2020 session but the Republican-controlled state Senate included no police accountability measures in its version of the budget bill.
